Healthy Lifestyles Promote Academic Success

Diet plays a bigger role than a lot of people think, especially when it comes to kids and breakfast.

"They need to be on for when they're getting tough courses that are difficult. It's really important for them to have a healthy breakfast either at school or at home," says dietician Joan Knoll.

But foods made up mostly of simple sugars, like doughnuts, or sweetened cereal may be easy, but aren't the best choice.

"(They need) something with some fiber, something with some whole grain cereal, something with whole grain breads, some sort of fruit and maybe even some protein- whether it's some sort of peanut butter on bread, some eggs, maybe some string cheese, something that has a balance," says Knoll.

And, even teachers notice when their kids come in without having a full belly.

"I have a policy in my room that if you haven't had breakfast, make sure you bring a healthy snack or two healthy snacks. One in the morning, because I know that if they haven't had a healthy breakfast, they're not thinking about the material that I'm teaching, they're thinking about their stomachs," says teacher Krista Diede.

Healthy foods are important, but staying hydrated is also key.

"It's the number one thing for your body to work at the best of it's ability. And, if you're not hydrated, then you're not focusing as much and you're not as alert. So, it's really important," says Diede.

Nutritious meals and plenty of water are key to your child's success in school. Nutritionists say children who skip breakfast are also more likely to have behavior problems in school.
