Program Offers Speech and Language Development

Posted: Updated:

The Early Intervention organization hosted a "play date" at BECEP for parents and their young children with speech and language needs. The goal of the event was to help parents develop those skills through daily routines. And to also create friendships among families who may also be dealing with some of the same struggles.

Arts and crafts, singing and dancing, and a puppet show. How much more fun can you get? This "Play Date" focused on families and toddlers with special needs.

"Play Date" teaches parents creative ways to build speech and language skills through motor and cognitive activities like  arts and crafts. This is the first program Early Intervention has hosted as of late, and everybody was excited.

"I think everybody, us therapist have been getting excited about this and talking about this for a long time and our families too. To be able to share and network," says early childhood special education therapist Renee Huber.

Early Intervention helps more than 300 children program wide and their parents appreciate the support of the program and of the other parents. Holly Inglish has four kids, including premature twins.  She says Early Intervention has been more than supportive.

"Yeah, I think it's a form of family. You know you really get the sense of family and there's always somebody there to answer a question or help you with a challenge," says parent Holly Inglish.

"Play date" and other programs like it are way for parents to provide therapy to their kids. And program leaders says these fun activities help incorporate routine exercises into teachable fun tasks.

Having worked mostly one on one with families, Early Intervention is now working with BECEP to offer programs like "Play Date" to the Bismarck and Mandan community at large.
