Bismarck homes will go up in value next year, but property taxes won't follow.
Last night, the Bismarck City Commission proposed its 2014 budget and today, a Commissioner says he thinks taxpayers will be pleased with what the city's done.
When property values go up, normally, so do property taxes.
But in Bismarck, that won't be the case next year.
"It's expensive to run a city, but we realize that the taxpayers want to do that with the least amount of taxes as possible and that's what we've tried to do," says Bismarck city commissioner Parrell Grossman.
The city commission approved a preliminary budget last night that would slightly decrease property taxes in Bismarck. Although not by much.
"You'll pay less by about a dollar or so but I think the significance is you're paying less instead of paying more," says Grossman.
And realtors agree that a dollar less is still better than paying too much.
"There are some good benefits as far as we're not going to get increases in our property taxes. Our homes are worth more, but we're not paying more taxes," says Bianco Realty agent John Myers.
The property tax decrease is a result of a nearly seven mill reduction by not using those seven mills, the city is saving about two million dollars.
"The property values rise and that increases the value of the mill, and so we actually get more money for the same amount of mills," says Grossman.
And homeowners say any savings are welcome.
"I'd love it. It's too high priced," says Ray Bird.
