Bakken Oil Express Delivers Across the Nation

Posted: Updated:

These white storage containers hold 90,000 barrels of oil. They were built after the Bakken Oil Express first started, when managers realized the 32,000 barrel storage tanks weren't nearly big enough.

"We always dreamed it would be this busy but how much more we're growing, I knew it could happen, but it's nice to see it starting to happen," says general manager Chris Lewis.

Between 100 and 200 trucks come rolling in to unload their oil 24 hours a day, seven days a week. But, even more oil comes in by pipeline, about 60-percent of the oil stored here arrives that way.

"In these tanks we've got several different customer's oil," says Lewis.

At any given time, there are 230,000 barrels of oil stored on site.

Every day approximately 130,000 barrels of oil are loaded onto these tanker cars and shipped to refineries across the country.

Even though oil is their biggest business, the BOE is starting to expand into other industry supplies. They offload one trainload of frack sand a month right now, and anticipate unloading one a week in the future.

"We have plans for an industrial park, bring things like lumber to the area, calcium chloride, all kinds of different commodities," says Lewis.

It takes about 12 to 18 hours to load a train, and the facility can load two trains at once. And right now, this is the only facility in the area with that capability.
