Deputies with the Burleigh County Sheriff's Department got on a bus this morning as part of this year's Deputy on a Bus program. And they say today was a great success. The program is in its fifth year and Burleigh County statistics show that violations and warnings are being handed out less and less each school year.
"When the bus is stopped and the red lights and stop arm are activated, nobody is allowed to be passing the bus," says Burleigh County school resource officer Rebecca Kopp.
The Deputy on the Bus program was designed as a way for students to feel comfortable and free to talk to officers if they ever wanted or needed help. It is also a way to monitor drivers as they come across school buses on the road. Deputy Rebecca Kopp feels that it is making an impact in both areas.
"We do have less numbers than last year, less statistics, which means less warnings and citations issued. However, I feel that the public is more aware of what we're doing so our efforts are paying off," says Kopp.
Deputies ride with students either on the commute to or from school for a few days each year. If they see any violations during their ride, they radio a patrol car, and that officer contacts the driver for the offense. Parents and teachers are glad this program exists.
"I think that's great. Good for the kids to see them," says parent Tamya Lasher.
"I think anything that constitutes safety for kids, makes kids safer. And if there's an issue on the buses with traffic and where the busses are experiencing problems it seems like that would be a workable solution," says Liberty School teacher John Wangen.
Deputy on the Bus is a school year long program with no specific bus or time schedule. Deputies say drivers should always follow the traffic laws when driving around school zones and school buses.
