Dickinson Police Warn Against Scam

Posted: Updated:

Dickinson police are warning residents this week about a new, but familiar, housing scam.

The scam involves posting advertisements to rent or buy homes and apartments on websites like Craigslist. Scammers take the information from actual housing ads, but change the contact information to their own. Once buyers are interested, the scammers ask for money via a wire transfer. After this, they send a fake lease for a signature and then disappear.

"With the oil fields, population, and the elderly, housing is very limited as it is right now. People are obviously taking advantage of our Achilles heel, so to speak," said Dickinson Police Detective Travis Leintz.

The Dickinson area is being targeted because of its booming population growth and fast-moving housing market, according to police. Officers have several tips for residents to avoid falling into one of these traps.

"Always proceed with caution," Leintz said. "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

In addition, go through a real estate agent whenever possible, Leintz said.

Dickinson police are working with other law enforcement officials to find the source of the scams.
