Church Feeds Neighbors

It's a nice thing to serve your neighbors. And that doesn't just mean those who live next door or down the block. Sometimes, people from one end of town are willing to do it for others who are a few miles away. And they haven't just done it once.

Welcome to a back-to-school barbecue. Every Tuesday evening, Charity Lutheran Church on North Washington provides a free dinner for those who live in the Riverside Elementary neighborhood in south Bismarck. Only it's not Riverside anymore. It's now South Central High School. But organizers say that won't make a difference.

"We still have the same families that live in this area of town. Riverside Elementary kids that were here are over at Dorothy Moses, and we were able to give them information about tonight's event. So it isn't going to affect anything as far as we're concerned," says Charity Lutheran Church administrator Doug Leet.

This has been going on for six years, and on this special occasion, there are inflatables for the children. Those who are involved have developed friendships with families and watched those youngsters grow up. And there never seems to be a shortage of volunteers from the church, schools, or the community.

"It's very meaningful. It just makes you appreciate everything that you do have and are able to do and are able to help out in the community," says volunteer Cindy Schaff.

The principal at South Central is happy to allow what's been called Riverside Harvest to continue, although you have to wonder if the name needs to change.
