Community Bowl Gets Personalized Lockers

Posted: Updated:

The Community Bowl has been the focal point for football and soccer games in Bismarck since 1997. And a multi-million dollar renovation project is almost complete. Along with that, it has a new name.

Brand new, personalized locker rooms, training rooms, a new score board and even a  revitalized track and field are just a few of the things student athletes are able to take advantage of at the MDU Resources Community Bowl. The Spectator Center is still under construction and will likely be done by November.

The newly re-named MDU Resources Community Bowl now has personalized locker rooms for each high school athletic team and the University of Mary and Bismarck State College. Money for the project came from Public Private sponsorship.

"All of our sponsors that have contributed have either come in right on time or even early with their sponsorship dollars. We anticipate the back end of it may actually cost a little bit less in interest cost in some of those sort of things," says Kelvin Hullet, Bismarck-Mandan Chamber of Commerce.

However, they are still taking donations.

"We're still looking for money. I'm actually wearing my protect our turf and you can go onto Protect our turf dot com and if somebody is still interested in giving to this facility we'll sure take it," says Bismarck Community Bowl authority Jim Haussler.

Construction costs are nearly eight million dollars. Montana Dakota Utilities gave two million, gaining naming rights to the bowl. five million came from various private funding efforts. In the past the Bowl has hosted thousands of sporting events, but with construction of more bathrooms, bigger concession stands, press and coach boxes and suites, hosting entertainment events will be possible.

"It's an effort to really take our facility to the next level and make sure that as our community grows, we are positioned to really be a first class community in all kinds of facilities," says Hullet.

In addition to the completed sections of the facility, the MDU Resource Community Bowl over all is on schedule and on budget for completion, and the committee couldn't be happier.
