Governor Declares September Suicide Prevention Month

Posted: Updated:

Governor Jack Dalrymple has proclaimed September suicide prevention month in North Dakota.

Among North Dakotans, suicide was the eighth leading cause of death in 2012, and the state ranks fourteenth in the nation for suicide deaths. But, the suicide prevention program director at the North Dakota Department of Health says, while the national rate continues to climb, the rate in the state is dropping. But, it's important to be aware of signs in people and notice behavioral changes.

Some risk factors include depression or family history.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention has scheduled a community walk this Saturday in Minot to raise funds for scientific research, education, and support treatment programs.
