First District Health Offers Car Seat Checks

According to state statistics, eighty percent of kids are using car seats that haven't been properly installed. To help reduce that number, First District Health in Minot is offering free car seat checks to families to help prevent accidental deaths in North Dakota.

From rear and forward facing car seats to booster seats, there are different instructions and weight requirements for each depending on the make and model. While many parents are not too far off from installing car seats correctly, they aren't securing the child correctly. Often times, the straps are too loose and the chest strap is too far down on the child.

"You know, that makes a big difference.  If your straps are loose to begin with, you get in an accident, your padding compresses down, now you're way looser, a baby can come right out of that seat.  So, we just want to make sure we got every step right," says First District Health injury prevention coordinator Bobbi Dickinson.

First District Health Unit in Minot offers free car seat checks the second Tuesday of every month at GMC dealerships in town.  To find out more about the program, call 852-1376.
