Department of Emergency Services Holds Annual Conference

Posted: Updated:

The Emergency Management Association and the Department of Emergency Services held their annual conference in Bismarck today. And you can probably imagine that they discussed emergencies.

While many Minot residents have returned to their homes after the devastating flood two years ago, recovery continues.

"It depends on who you ask but overall I think the city of Minot has made tremendous strides in recovering from the flood. There are of course many personal stories where people are still struggling. But on the whole the city of Minot has done very well and a lot of the people have and were really glad to see that," says city finance director Cindy Hemphill.

But the process to a near full recovery wasn't easy. Now, two years later, she said about 80-percent of people in Minot have returned to their homes.

"There are a certain number of people that have elected to just leave their homes because they know that they're in the path of the projected flood protection and that their home will be acquired, so they just left their home," says Hemphill.

She added that the city is working with the state water commission to move forward with the plan. She shared her experience during and after the flood with those attending the conference.

"It's a lot of learning more about what other people went through so you can bring something back to your own community and take a look at your plans and see what you can integrate from what somebody else learned, through their experience," says Burleigh County emergency manager Mary Senger.

The conference continues Wednesday. A speaker will recount what happened when a tornado hit Joplin, Missouri, two years ago.
