University of Mary Hosts TOMS Vagabond Tour

Posted: Updated:

An online humanitarian shoe company tours the nation, featuring its merchandise and helping children in need. The University of Mary hosted the TOMS Vagabond Tour with several events throughout the day.

This is not the first time TOMS has come to U Mary's campus. Students and faculty say they continue to support this company because it was founded on the same principles as the University.

"The fact that we can support children and others that are in need of eye glasses, that are in need of clothing, that are in need of shoes. It makes it that much better for us to be able to come out and have a really good time and allows us to do good as well," says University of Mary Vice President of Academic Affairs Diane Flaudeland.

"By supporting TOMS, you're supporting the future. So TOMS is for tomorrow. So you're helping the children of tomorrow," says TOMS Vagabond Tour captain Melissa Lopez.

The Vagabond Tour travels through 48 states in 52 cities, selling sunglasses, shoes and shirts that do more than make the buyer look fashionable.

By purchasing one pair of TOMS sunglasses, University of Mary students can give sight to a child in need.

For every pair of sunglasses sold, TOMS will give a child either glasses, surgery or a doctor visit. The group will also give shoes to a child in need for every pair that's purchased. Even students who didn't purchase from TOMS bought the message.

"It feels inspiring. My major is pre-med biology, and I want to actually help people out as well," says sophomore Mary Norman.

University of Mary communications majors helped set up the event, allowing their fellow classmates to learn more about the company and its cause, and check out the merchandise they normally can only see online.

Many students also took advantage of the opportunity to win a trip to meet TOMS founder Blake Mycoskie or an internship with the company.  They created an application video stating how TOMS has inspired them to do something that matters.
