Industrial Commission Proposes New Well Pressure Regulations

Posted: Updated:

North Dakota is estimated to have almost 10,000 operating wells, and while most run smoothly blowouts can occur. This year, there have been 22 blowouts on rigs. And while 19 have been described as not so serious, four, including one that happened last month, leaked fluids for several days.

The North Dakota Industrial Commission has a very broad rule on controlling well pressure. That rule states all companies must keep well pressure under control at all times. Now, the North Petroleum Council and companies operating more than ten rigs want to create further regulations.

"What the industry did is put together a committee of the companies that operate more than double digit number of rigs and they have come up with a set of best management practices that they want to put in place voluntarily to see if they can't significantly reduce this 20 something oil rig incidents we have seen within a year," says Department of Mineral Resources director Lynn D. Helms.

Helms says he was unable to comment on the most recent blow out in August, as the commission is still waiting on the final spill report. However they do know that liquids, such as oil and saltwater did get off of the well pad.
