Sex Offender Arrested in Multi-Agency Inspection

Posted: Updated:

It's not often you get law enforcement from different parts of the state in one place, but that was the case in Williston this week. There was a multi-agency effort to find every registered sex offender in Williams County and make sure they were in compliance with the law.

Grand Forks and Cass County Sheriff's are just two of the many agencies that were helping the Williston Police Department and Williams County do compliance checks on the 124 registered sex offenders in Williams County.

"Ninety-five were compliant, three were noncompliant in the county, two were noncompliant in the city, and one of those was arrested," says Williams County Sheriff Scott Busching.

There were 20 noncomplainant sex offenders on the federal level, which normally means they've moved out of the area without letting law enforcement know.

"We will look at those folks real hard over the next few weeks, and determine whether or not they're still in the state, or whether or not they've gone to another state," says North Dakota District Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Dan Orr.

Two sex offenders were already in jail, and two were deceased. The U.S. Marshal service was also involved with the compliance checks this week. Orr says since law enforcement began sweeping the area on Monday, the Law Enforcement Center has been busy.

"There's been some people coming in and making an effort to get their information updated because they heard we were in the area," says Orr.

North Dakota BCI and Probation and Parole were also assisted in the compliance checks. During the three day effort, about 500 hours were put in by law enforcement.

"It sent a message out to sex offenders that are required to register that we are checking into, we are looking after that, and hopefully it will increase the compliance rate," says Busching.

Busching says this will not be the last strike force. They will continue their efforts with the sex offenders, but they will also be checking up on other things, like people in the area with warrants.
