Experts Say Water is Essential to Healthy Living

Posted: Updated:

It makes up two-thirds of your body, so drinking plenty of water throughout the day is an essential part of staying healthy. When you're properly hydrated, your body will operate at its best, and doctors say, if you don't drink enough water, the effects can be pretty bad.

"Your kidneys might not function well. You could have side-effects with your digestive track, so constipation is a common side-effect, or heartburn. You might feel some joint side-effects because water is important in the cushioning of your joints," says Dr. Krissondra Klopp, Sanford Health.

Fitness experts say drinking water while exercising not only helps with hydration. Water has other benefits as well.

"It also helps energize muscles, you know, so that's why people tell you to stay hydrated when you're exercising. And the last thing, water can help calorie consumption, so it's really good for maintaining a healthy lifestyle," says Gold's Gym fitness director David Widdison.

First Lady Michelle Obama has also recently launched a campaign saying that drinking just one more glass of water a day can help.

"Giving people ballpark numbers probably won't help the average human, so, you know, taking time to take one more glass a day isn't going to hurt," says Widdison.

And for those who spend time in the gym, remember to always drink your water!

"I try to drink throughout the day regularly. I would say, 40-50 ounces a day," says gym member Amy Schmit.

It's an easy habit to get into, whether you carry a water bottle or make trips to the drinking fountain, staying hydrated is easy and will make your body a lot happier.

Doctors also say that dividing your body weight in half will tell you how many ounces of water you should be drinking in a day.
