North Dakota Red Cross Assists in Colorado Flooding

Posted: Updated:

More than 600 people are still unaccounted for in Colorado after flooding destroyed communities near Boulder. More than 1,000 remain stranded and at least 5 are dead.

Many agencies are working to help people in those areas, including the Red Cross. The North Dakota chapter is supporting rescue operations by providing shelters and supplies.

"Right now, we're on standby," Allen McGeough at the Minot Red Cross knows how devastating flooding can be, especially when it happens so fast, without any warning.

"We really feel for those folks in Colorado that have suffered losses, and the Red Cross can be there to help in whatever way we can," says McGeough.

And Minot Red Cross knows quite a bit about flood recovery.

"Because we know these floods come, often times they can stay for a long time and anytime the water receded we're going to be there to help them recover and help out," says McGeough.

Right now, 6 people from our region have been sent to Colorado to provide shelter, food, supplies, to help the thousands of people affected. But, folks in Minot are ready just in case they're called.

"What we did the last two summers after the flooding here, we had our volunteers out there in the community helping people out in the emergency response vehicles, so our anticipation is that we'll be involved in the recovery side of it," says McGeough.

McGeough says as the event continues, the Red Cross will reach out to more chapters, calling more volunteers and emergency response vehicles to help.
