Seniors Learn About Health and Wellness

Posted: Updated:

Several seniors from across southwestern North Dakota went to Dickinson today to learn about ways to remain healthy and live independently.

Living in North Dakota in 2013 can be expensive, and that makes it difficult for senior citizens who live on a fixed income to get the services they need. But, the Governor's Committee hosted a forum in Dickinson today that gave seniors a lot of useful information for living well.

Life for senior citizens in North Dakota has changed.

"The old motto was when you get old you go into a nursing home and that's just how it is. Well, it's not really how it is anymore," says social worker Sara Krebs.

And those changes mean seniors don't always know where to go when they need health and senior services.

"Certainly we have a lot of older adults living in North Dakota and the whole purpose is to provide them with information that helps them stay healthy independent and living in their homes and communities," says North Dakota Aging Services director Jan Engan.

The Governor's Committee on Aging held a forum in Dickinson for senior citizens living in southwestern North Dakota. Service providers and healthcare specialists gave seminars to talk about everything from preventing fraud to finding help for independent living.

"We're going to improve brain health, body health, social and emotional health. So, I think by going and listening to the speakers and looking at the displays put up by service providers, there's a little bit of something for everyone," says Engan.

"I learn something new every time so I like to attend as many as I can," says homecare provider Barbara Cousins.

Seniors also had the option to get bone density, hearing and blood pressure screenings.

"There's things for every age," says Cousins.

And presenters say they think events like this forum help the senior community become more knowledgeable and independent.

"The aging population is growing and being able to have informed decisions is very important," says Krebs.

Several more regional forums are coming up across the state, including two in Grand Forks and Fargo.
