Credit Fraud is on the Rise

Posted: Updated:

Credit and debit card fraud can cost someone quite a bit of money, and it's a crime that's happening almost every day in Williston. It happens because it's an easy crime to commit, and it's a hard one for detectives to solve. The thief doesn't even need your credit or debit card to starting making fraudulent charges. When you swipe your card at a gas station or a grocery store, all someone needs to do is get the numbers from your card to start making charges. But detectives say there is something simple you can do that could help you if your cards are stolen.

"Put on the back of your card check ID and make copies of it so if something happens to you, you at least have a copy of what it says on the back of your ID, and you can get it to whatever credit card, bank, and say hey the merchant was supposed to check for my identification," says Detective Cory Collings, Williston Police Department.

Collings says although it is a hard crime to solve, it's still important to let your bank know your cards have been stolen, so they deactivate the card.
