GED Changes at Minot Adult Learning Center

Posted: Updated:

In today's society it can be hard to get the job you want without a GED or College Diploma.  But for people looking to further their career or education, there is a place in Minot that can help get you on your way.

Whether it's to get into college and further their education, fill a requirement for a work promotion or to just get a better job, Minot's Adult Learning Center has been full of students looking to get their GEDs.  "Well for most students when they come in, they don't really know what they want to start on.  Math and writing seem to be the most challenging, at least as far as they feel or think," said Janet Fisher, a GED Instructor for the Learning Center.

From teenagers to Senior Citizens, the Adult Learning Center has become a popular place.  Last year 100 people graduated with their GEDs from the Minot Center.  And students are usually surprised at how fast information comes back to them.  Students must complete tests in five categories to receive their GEDs.  Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading and Writing.  And need to score at least a 410 on each test and have an overall average of 450.  "Students don't really have to have a huge amount of background information for them.  They have to learn how to read the question, how to eliminate poor answers and most of those questions just deal with common sense.  What they've learned along the line in life, period," stated Fisher.

And people can still register.  But current and prospective students should remember that the deadline to get their GED in 2013 in December 13th.  Depending on their schedules, most students can complete their GED tests in anywhere from a few weeks to a month.

And there are some changes on the way for 2014.  The tests will no longer be pencil and paper, they will be administered on computers.  And will become slightly more challenging to meet the standards of today's graduating high school seniors.  But perspective students shouldn't be alarmed, "I don't see anything in the horizon that will make it so difficult that somebody won't be able to pass it.  I think once we get acquainted with what's required of the new test, I think our students will do very well," Fisher concluded.

One other thing for people to keep in mind, students working on getting their GEDs who do not complete all five tests by December 13th, Will loose any test scores they may have.  Those score will not carry over to the new system in 2014.
