Beaver Statue Coming to MSU

Posted: Updated:

To celebrate Minot State University's 100th birthday, a talented North Dakota artist is helping bring the university's mascot to life on campus.

Just outside the Student Center, there's a blue tarp covering up the latest addition to the Minot State campus.

For more than 6 months, artist Bennett Brien has been creating a Beaver sculpture for the university.

"They're usually challenging, " said Brien.  "I had to get a stuffed one and measure it and double the measurements."

Piece by piece, Brien came up with the perfect design, but it wasn't easy.

Brien said, "The face was kind of tough.  The belly was too.  The tail was kind of interesting.  Coming up out of the water is what he's doing.  He's carrying, which symbolizes, I guess, the beaver's a good worker and he builds things and creates things and however, that translates to the students codes or ethics and whatever and they want to do with their time here.  You know, the stick symbolizes, maybe, a diploma or whatever you achieve here."

Brien a Belcourt native has close ties to Minot State.  He had relatives that attended the university years ago.   And, when asked to work on the campus, he felt called to help.

"You know, at first, it's a hard thing to figure out.  You got to get your model and what not and you got to use your brain and that hurts sometimes, you know, for me anyway.  But, after a while, you got to work and work and work.  Then, when it starts all pulling together and you get to this phase man, you're just elated in a way," said Brien.

It's something he hopes will be a center piece on campus for years to come.

Brien said, "I hope they like it you know.  I mean, it's pretty cool someone likes what you do."

In addition to the Beaver sculpture, Brien has done work for the State Capitol Building in Bismarck, the North Dakota Game and Fish Department, and the University of North Dakota.

The official dedication ceremony of the beaver sculpture will be next Tuesday at 10 am between the Student Center and the Dome.
