Williston Plans Reconstruction Projects

Posted: Updated:

The final plan for the downtown remodel is coming together. The plan for Main St. and downtown Williston has been talked about for awhile, but a start date for some of the projects is in sight. The entire plan is three separate projects, and will give Williston a true downtown feeling.

Two of the three projects for the downtown project are being rolled into one. The main street reconstruction, and the street scape projects are going to get things started in downtown Williston.

"The Main Street reconstruction project takes care of the aging water, sewer, and street surface downtown, and the street scape plan is just kind of saying well, if we're going to rip it up, we might as well make it look pretty," says Williston Planning and Zoning staff planner Rachel Ressler.

Ressler says pending approval from the DOT, those projects are going out for bid in March, and construction will hopefully be starting next summer. The third project is the downtown remodel. Planning and zoning has a plan for the project, but it's not cut and dry.

"If someone comes to us and says, 'I want to do this type of project,' we can say, 'Okay. These are probably the areas you should look to do that.' Or if someone says, 'I have this piece of property, what can I do with it?' We have an answer. We'll just have a way to direct that development to say this is an acceptable use, or this is not an ok use for downtown," Ressler says.

The downtown plan goes from Railroad Park, up to Harmon Park, and from University over to Second Avenue West.

"As you get south of 6th street, it's kind of spreads out a little more, and there we're really looking at what everybody kind of thinks of as the downtown area," says Ressler.

An approval date for the downtown remodel is right around the corner.

"The downtown plan itself hopefully will get approved by the city commission in November/December that's about when we're taking it to them," says Ressler.

The planning and zoning department will then come up with a few public projects for downtown, but private projects our entirely people downtown and what they decide to do.
