Japanese Students at WSC

Posted: Updated:

Students Sarina Takano and Yusuke Homma are a long way from home. To be more specific, they are thousands of miles away. They are from Tokyo, Japan.   Sarina and Yusuke are spending a semester abroad here at Williston state college.   Associate professor of communications Kim Weismann explained the program.

"Every year we take students to Japan in may for ten days and in September they bring students here for ten days and then we also have a short program for students to come over for a semester and they can just work on their conversational English skills" stated Weismann.

This is the third semester the study abroad program has been in effect. Weismann believes the Japanese students are making a lot of progress.

"The students are definitely improving their English skills and when you're immersed in the culture it definitely helps so they're practicing in classes and with their roommates and friends, so they're really doing well" stated Weismann.

Sarina is taking art classes and Yusuke is enrolled in computer classes and they're both in an interpersonal communications class. They both like their roommates and are excited to be Williston!

"My teacher is very kind to me" said Sarina.

"My favorite thing in Williston state college is great dorm. This dormitory is very nice" said Yusuke.

The students have almost three months left here in their stay in North Dakota.
