Testimony Continues in Murder Trial

Posted: Updated:

The jury is deliberating the fate of Waylon Hicks, who is accused of second degree murder in the stabbing death of Jeremiah Sage. The jury went into deliberations shortly before 4 p.m.

Earlier in the day, the defense began calling witnesses. They included family, friends and co-workers who each spoke about Hicks' character and work ethic. The prosecution countered that those statements were not relevant because none of them were at the marina the night of July 20th 2012.

During closing arguments, the prosecution argued that Hicks had a hatred of homosexuals and acted violently because he was appalled another man would come on to him, not because he was afraid for his life. They said Hicks used unreasonable force and could have simply pushed Sage away or ran out of the truck.

Hick's lawyer says he acted in self-defense, believing he was going to be raped and didn't know if Sage had a weapon, and that Hicks only meant to immobilize Sage.

The prosecution says Hicks know what he was doing, because in an interview with police, Hicks said he stabbed Sage "where you put your heart for the pledge of allegiance."

The jury will continue deliberations tomorrow and we'll have more when they reach a verdict.
