State Develops Pre-Kindergarten Content Standards

Posted: Updated:

Education is key to a child's future. And some say the earlier the better. North Dakota now has its first pre-kindergarten content standards.

Everyone knows that pre-schoolers love to play. So, the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction formed a writing committee of teachers, professors, and directors to create content standards for preschool children based off of playing. The standard committee took advice from national and state experts on early childhood development, learning and education.

"We're developing the skills and the habits that these kids will use throughout their education. And we're giving them a really good basis for learning because they're looking at all the areas of development," says Kris Ronningen, BECEP.

Ronningen says these standards are necessary for parents and daycare instructors as well. They state how much a child should know before moving on.

"Kindergarten teachers have an understanding of what the students were exposed to during their pre-kindergarten years. The kindergarten teachers understand what eh standards are then they can better make their curriculum and their classroom," says Tara Bitz.

The content standards cover all major areas of development from social and language skills to math and science.
