Good Works: Applefesters

Posted: Updated:

When you're holding a fundraiser, it's counterproductive to pay the people who help. You need plenty of volunteers. And so it is for Apple Fest at Buckstop Junction this weekend. Proceeds go towards the Bismarck Cancer Center. Organizers use helpers for all sorts of things, including tasks that might seem a bit mundane.

When you hold an event called Apple Fest, it's a good idea to have plenty of apples. And these will serve a specific purpose. People will hand them out during the downtown parade Saturday morning, advertising the big event, thanks to the stickers that these happy helpers are placing on them. They're four of some two hundred volunteers performing multiple tasks.

"Taking tickets, giving prizes, retrieving bean bags and apple tosses," says Applefest volunteer coordinator Denise Kaelberer.

It doesn't take very long to do several hundred apples. But that's not the point. These folks from RSVP spend their spare time helping out wherever and whenever they can. It just seems to be in their nature.

"I just feel like giving back to the community. It's my turn. I've worked so many years, and it's just my turn," says volunteer Bev Larson.

These seasoned citizens will be joined by plenty of younger people, including students, clubs, families and Cancer Center employees.

"I can't even say enough, like I almost get teared up because they mean the world to us. It doesn't happen without them. And they don't expect anything in return. And they give  a lot, and they'll do whatever we tell them to do with a smile on their face," says Kaelberer.

Perhaps it's not just apples but cheerful attitudes that keep the doctor away as well.

Again, Apple Fest will be held at Buckstop Junction in southeast Bismarck Saturday and Sunday. There will be food, games, entertainment, baked goods, and all sorts of fun.

If you'd like to highlight a group or an individual who always seems willing to help out, let Alan know by phone, email or Facebook.
