Minot City Transit Enters Next Phase in Bus Study

Posted: Updated:

Since January, the Minot City Transit has been working with a consulting firm to help improve the city's transportation system.  And, as they gear up for the next phase in the process, they need your help.

With more people moving to the area, more people are using the city's transportation system.  And Minot is trying to keep up with community growth.

From all of the feedback I'm getting, people want this service and they feel they need this service and that's what we're trying to provide is something for all citizen of Minot and not just one group," says shop maintenance superintendent Brian Horinka, City of Minot Bus Services.

That's why the city hired Nelson and Nygaard Consulting Associates earlier this year to help conduct a bus study. And, after spending months drafting multiple reports and doing extensive research, the consulting firm is ready to present their blueprints to the public at two open house meetings this week.

"Now, they get a chance to look at what we're projecting we do.  That gives them the opportunity to tell us yes, we think you're on the right track.  No, we think you need to change this a little bit.  So, we will take into very serious consideration all the comments that are going to be made," says Horinka.

When it's all said and done, Horinka hopes to have both a short and long term transit plan to keep up with a growing community.

"Now, they can look at what we're proposing and see if that fits what they'd like to see as far as a transit system," says Horinka.

The main goal for the first-term plan is to be able to make several changes without much of a financial change to what it costs to run the current system, but it will take time.

"I'd like to see it happen faster than it is, but it affects a lot of people," says Horinka.  "It's very difficult to say one day, okay, here's what our transit system looks like today and tomorrow morning, it's going to be completely different."

Horinka hopes to present the final findings from the bus study to City Council sometime in November with a final report closed by the end of the year.

Open house meetings will be held on Wednesday at Minot State University's Student Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and at Dakota Square Mall on Thursday from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The public is encouraged to attend.
