North Dakota Ranks Second in Forbes Report

Posted: Updated:

As we told you last night, Forbes magazine ranked North Dakota number two in the nation when it comes to business. And they weren't surprised to see North Dakota near the top of the list. There are many things that make our state an attractive place for businesses and job seekers.

After working with AmeriPride Linen for 18 years, Fred Koenig decided to leave and open his own business.

"I'm getting older and I needed to have a change in what I'm doing and I found this and it seemed to be a perfect fit," says Koenig.

He decided to go with Transworld Business Advisors, a franchise already set up at locations around the world.

"What we do is we provide a service for brokeraging, so we can sell a persons business. We also do franchise consulting, where we can help people find a franchise or we can help them franchise their business as well as mergers and acquisitions," says Koenig.

He's one of many people doing well in the state's business economy. Forbes magazine ranked North Dakota number two in the nation, which doesn't come as a surprise to many.

"That doesn't surprise me, especially with the most recent data and the most recent economic trends that we've seen. It certainly lead by agriculture and energy in the state as far as the two sectors that are the strongest," says Michael Ziesch, Job Service of North Dakota.

North Dakota currently has the lowest unemployment rate in the country at 2.7 percent, not far off from the state's historic low of 2.4 percent in 1997.

"And what's really impressive is you have to consider in 1997 we had about 53,000 fewer people in the labor force and that's a population about the size of Grand Forks currently. So we're able to maintain a very low unemployment rate while still having expanded our labor force greatly," says Ziesch.

As of last month, there were nearly 22,000 jobs available and 13,000 job seekers in the state.

Forbes ranked Virginia number one. Maine ranked the lowest.
