Shots Fired at White House

Posted: Updated:

Shots were fired in Washington, D.C. this afternoon. An armed woman was killed, an officer was injured, and the U.S. Capitol was on lockdown.

There was a car chase in the circle just below the main stairwell at the Capitol. Police say it started at the White House when a woman rammed her car into a gate in an effort to smash her way in.

The Secret Service pursued her and surrounded her near the west side of the Capitol. There was a shootout and the woman was killed.

North Dakota Senator John Hoeven was walking outside the capitol with Senator Rob Portman of Ohio when they heard the gunshots. They were unable to get back inside before the lockdown began and ended up taking shelter inside a police barricade.

"There were other people out on the capitol grounds that they had get down as well, but most of those folks they actually hustled into the Capitol. But see, we were out by the street, so they just had us stay there until they had things a little more organized," says Senator John Hoeven.

"It just is a great reminder that everyday the capitol police come here and most of them, all of them would take a bullet for any member, any tourist or anyone out there. And they're here working. They're here working extra shifts because of the high tension in this very troubling time, and they're not getting paid," says Senator Heidi Heitkamp.

During the lockdown, Senator Heitkamp was inside on the Senate floor.

Both Senators and their staff members are okay.
