National Poll Suggests Increase in Opposition to Fracking

Posted: Updated:

Oil is flowing in the Bakken, but a new national poll shows that opposition to fracking has increased.

Forty-four percent of those surveyed now favor increased use of fracking while 49 percent are opposed. From the survey conducted in March to September, the opposition to fracking rose by 10 points. This data contradicts what the North Dakota Petroleum Council has found in their polls which only include numbers from North Dakotans, which surprised their communications director Tessa Sandstrom.

"The statistics were a little surprising. In our own studies and polls that we have done however show most North Dakotans are a little more informed about the issue and show quite the opposite, that hydraulic fracturing is not a big concern and that federal regulations to halt it are of greater concern to them," says Tessa Sandstrom.

The survey also shows that less than half of the respondents did not know that the U.S. Energy production has increased in recent years.

The survey was conducted by Pew Research Center.
