Sports Spotlight: Killdeer Cowboys

Posted: Updated:

The Killdeer Cowboys are off to a perfect 6-0 to the football season and turning some heads around Class-A. One big reason for their success is their senior captain, Calum Blankenship. Aside from his stand-out play on the field, Blankenship has taken a leadership role in the locker room.  In this weeks Sports Spotlight, Jason Dumas caught up with Cowboys and found out how their captain has his teammates believing a state title is well within reach.

Killdeer has established themselves as one of the top teams in Class-A this year. But prior to the season, no one was really talking about the Cowboys as contenders. It's been a pleasant surprise.

"We didn't really have a whole lot of expectations as far as being where we are at right now. There's been a little bit of a surprise to us," says head coach Louise Dobitz.

But their early success has left them only wanting more. And that sentiment is fueled by their leader on the field, Calum Blankenship.

"Every practice our coach thinks about challenging ourselves and every practice we have to run more, lift more. Mentally we have to get better. Physically we have to, too," says senior Calum Blankenship.

An attitude like that is what has propelled Blankenship's teammates to look up to him over the years.

"Calum is a great kid and my best friend. He came here as a freshman and he's been setting a good example ever since," says senior Tucker Beck.

While his leadership qualities have stood out to those around him, his athletic ability is also second to none.

"I've done cross country, football, basketball, track, and rodeo in the fall and spring," says Blankenship.

"He's a guy that puts it all out when he plays. Basketball court, he's all over the floor. Football, you can put him anywhere on the defense and he's going to do a good job," says Dobitz.

A team usually takes on the personality on its best player, so when taking a closer look at Blankenship and the Cowboys, their success shouldn't be a surprise anymore.

Killdeer played the JV team from Dickinson High on Friday and the Cowboys big showdown with top ranked Hazen is on Tuesday, the 15th.
