Government Shutdown Enters Third Week

Posted: Updated:

We're now entering the third week of the government shutdown, but some lawmakers say it could soon be over. Both Representative Kevin Cramer and Senator Heidi Heitkamp say they are hopeful Congress could reach a deal to end the shutdown, possibly in the coming days.

Cramer says the deal would likely open the government back up and temporarily raise the debt ceiling. But he says lawmakers would need to continue the discussion and address the issues again at a later date, possibly in January or February.

"We expect to use any time in that range of now to 45 days, to 90 days or whatever is negotiated. We expect to use that time to negotiate a long term solution. Because we can not talk about raising the debt ceiling without talking about the underlying issues that create this huge debt," says Cramer.

He says that includes the financial aspect of the President's Affordable Healthcare Act.
