United Blood Services Announces Urgent Need for O Negative Blood Donors

Posted: Updated:

The demand for blood is outpacing the supply, which is why the United Blood Services issued an appeal for type O-negative blood donors.

O-negative blood can be received by any patient, but only six percent of the population has the blood type.

"O negative can be given to anyone in an emergency when there is no time to cross-match the donor's blood with the patient's," says Jennifer Charbonneaux, center manager for United Blood Services. "When you do the math, our community needs O negative donors to come in almost twice as often as everyone else!"

Donors may call 1-800-917-4929 or go to www.unitedbloodservices.org to make an appointment to donate at a blood center or mobile blood drive.
