Roosevelt Park Zoo Plans Renovations

Posted: Updated:

Staff at the Roosevelt Park Zoo worked throughout the summer continuing their effort to recover from the 2011 Mouse River Flood.  And now, they're setting their eyes on the future. The Park Board has approved bids for renovations to the old education center on the zoo grounds. The center was built in 1920 and has been used as a learning center for zoo visitors.

In November, bids will go out to turn the building into a new aviary exhibit.  The renovated building will hold over 100 birds, and offer indoor areas for animals during the winter months.

"I really have to compliment the Park Board, this has been a very rugged several years on the Park Board.  But they are very quickly transitioning from repair to looking at the future, and how do we meet the needs of a growing Minot," says zoo director David Merritt.

The project is expected to cost $628,000 and funding for the renovations has already been secured.

Merritt hopes the building will open to the public later in the summer of 2014.
