Park Board Approves Bid for Maysa Arena Expansion

Posted: Updated:

The Park Board has approved a bid for construction of a third sheet of ice at the Maysa Arena.

The Minot Hockey Boosters along with other user groups have raised $1.26 million in private contributions. Those funds will be used to build a new mezzanine that would eventually connect to the new ice rink.

The estimated total cost of the project comes in around $7.5 million. The Park District and the city of Minot have already provided some funding for the project, but the Boosters and other project supporters would need to raise another $1.4 million towards the construction. While it's a steep amount, the Park Board is excited that progress is being made.

"It's a good feeling. It means that they're having success in raising the funds that they need to raise.  Some things still need to fall into place, but things are moving ahead. So, it's a good feeling for us and for them," says Minot Park District director Ron Merritt.

Organizers expect the full project will take nine months to build, and hope for a speedy start to get skates on the new sheet of ice by 2014.
