BSC Celebrates Careers in Energy Week

Posted: Updated:

The energy boom has certainly put North Dakota on the map, but not all of the jobs are based in the Bakken. Bismarck State College's Careers in Energy Week highlights the various job opportunities in the energy industry.

The oldest energy course is the college's Electrical Lineworker Program. During the course, lessons range from power plant and sub-station work to building power lines. A majority of the lessons take place on a two-acre outdoor training facility in Mandan.

"Our students have a natural love for the outdoors, that's obvious," says instructor Keith Landeis. "They want to be outside. Whenever I do an interview I repeatedly hear that the thought of a desk job drives them crazy.

The outdoor learning space is a big draw for many of Landeis' students.

"I figured it would be great because I like working outdoors, helping out the community, and it's a great way to make money," says student Adam Stevens.

The program started in 1970 with a class of 13 students. Today the course is at it's maximum capacity of 54 students, which speaks volumes to the demand for these types of workers.

"Job demand has been so strong the last few years that either way there's a job placement for them, but naturally the advanced degree will help them probably sooner or later," says Landeis.

The program has been at student capacity for several years, and allows students to graduate with a certificate, or continue on with general education to receive and associates degree. After graduation, students must then complete an apprenticeship for four years.
