Residents Reflect on Anniversary of Bucyrus Fire

Posted: Updated:
One year ago, residents from the tiny town of Bucyrus had to evacuate because a fire was raging through the town.

Since then many people have left, but some decided to stay.

Every time Linda Wiskus drives home, she's reminded about her house and everything in it that burned to the ground.

Linda Wiskus says,  "I wish no one would have to go through this."

A year later Linda, her son Justin and their dog Whiskey live in this mobile home.

Wiskus says,  "I may have a home that I'm living in, but it's just not the same."

Across the street, Darrell Kunkel surveys the work on his new house. This is nothing new for him. He's had TWO of his homes burn to the ground.

Darrell Kunkel says, "It's gut wrenching to see. Not something you want to see. No words to describe how you feel."

Charred wood like this dots the area a year later. But residents of this tiny southwest town are determined to move on.

Kunkel says,  "We're resilient. Life isn't easy. We'll keep on going I guess."

Wiskus says,   "A small town does pull together, we found that out here."

The town is getting back on its feet thanks in large part to the enormous amount of support from across the state and country.

Wiskus says, "It's just nice to see the bright colors and it's a reminder to us that people do care."

Kunkel says,  "It's a good feeling, just trying to get life back for the kids."

There are currently 17 people living in Bucyrus. Officials still don't know the cause of the fire.
