National Guard Soliders React to Impact of Government Shutdown

Posted: Updated:

Congress finally passed legislation last night to end the government shutdown and extend the debt ceiling deadline.  Even though furloughed federal workers are back in the office today it's still not business as usual for some.  While all the soldiers and employees at the North Dakota National Guard are back to work, they have plenty of catching up to do.

Staff sergeant Jeremy Greenstein is the state partnership program coordinator with the National Guard for Ghana. He spent two weeks in the country with other guard members and when he got back,  the government shutdown.

"Basically came back for one day and then Tuesday morning about 11 o'clock I was sent home and just kind of waited around until we got the notice that we could come back," says Greenstein.

And he wasn't the alone. Nearly 500 soldiers and employees of the guard were also sent home.

"Within about a week we were able to bring most of them back because of the nature of the mission and we still had a handful of employees that were furloughed until last night," says Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk.

"Good thing about it was I got some home stuff done, which helped out and got caught up on some of that. That was a good thing, got some stuff winterized and got the sprinklers blown out and you know basically get ready for winter," says Greenstein.

He was able to come back to work after about six days. But says even though he wasn't off the whole shutdown, he's still catching up.

"I'm still trying to get caught up with numbers and stuff like that from all the people that we had taken over with us. We're still trying to get all the paperwork done for that and the final numbers tallied for how much we actually spent over there," says Greenstein.

Sprynczynatyk says the guard is also trying to reschedule events that were supposed to take place but had to be canceled due to the shutdown.

All furloughed federal workers will be receiving back pay for the time they had to spend off work during the shutdown.
