Students Use Online Resources to Learn About the Bakken

Posted: Updated:

Students at Bismarck State College need just a computer and internet access to learn more about petroleum production in the Bakken. The Petroleum Production Technology program provides students with an introduction to the various aspects of oil production.

"We give our students a base to grow off of, and also touch on mechanical aspects, mechanical maintenance, instrumentation control, electrical fundamentals," says Professor Ron Baranko.

Baranko was hired two years ago to help develop the program with other staff members at the college. The course is taught online, however on campus students can also attend courses at the college. Baranko says he has students from all over the U.S., from Texas, to Utah, to Colorado and many are logging in from the Dakotas.

He thinks that the program prepares students for the expansive list of jobs that students can graduate into.

"It then goes into the petroleum end of it so it gives them a general overview of the industry and have the basic knowledge to go forward."

As part of the course the college arranges for students to shadow workers at oil fields in their respective states.
