Local Soldiers Send Off

Posted: Updated:

This morning, the Bismarck Army Aviation Support Facility was full of soldiers and their families for a special send-off ceremony. The Bismarck based Company C, 2nd Battalion 285th Aviation Regiment is deploying soon for a yearlong  peacekeeping mission in Kosovo.

Governor Dalrymple, Senators Hoeven and Heitkamp and Congressman Cramer were just some of the special speakers that addressed the aviators this morning.

"I always describe the send-off ceremony as a day that's a very difficult day, but a very proud day," says Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk. "It's difficult obviously because your loved one is going to be gone for nearly a year, but it's a proud day because you know the family members can be proud of their soldiers and I'm proud of all of our soldiers because of what they do and how well they do it."

The Unit will be heading to the republic of Kosovo in SouthEast Europe, to provide air-transport  for U.S. and NATO forces and to include training and assistance to the Kosovo Security Forces.

"There are many roles for the military across the world, some of them are more direct with protection and combat and others are geared more towards peacekeeping and we accept any mission that's given to us as soldiers," says Amn. Joshua Simmers.

Not only is saying goodbye to loved ones is hard enough as it is, 6 out of the 36 soldiers have had or will be having a child born in the past 7 months.

"Mine is going to be the last one due on the day of the deployment so I'm going to catch up with my guys in Fort Hood and it'll be interesting," says Amn. Seth Vinchattle.

In addition to the training the unit received here, they will also  have in-depth training at the mobilization station in Fort Hood, Texas in preparation for this deployment.
