Junk Food Causes Acne

Junk food doesn't just help you gain weight, it can also cause acne. And with all the highly processed foods available, acne problems are showing up earlier in teens and even adults. A lot of issues with acne can be traced back to the foods we put into our bodies, and doctors say, those who fill their diets with processed foods are more likely to have problems with their skin.

Sure, processed foods may taste good, but they can cause some serious problems.

"Preservatives are harder for our bodies to process. Different chemicals-sometimes there's more pesticides in them that just puts a strain on our body's major processing organs, which are the liver, the lungs and the kidneys. And, if you can't detox those chemicals and those pesticides, then it comes out in your skin," says Dr. Elizabeth Allmendinger.

Now, I know heading straight for the junk food section is pretty easy when you get to the grocery store, but your skin will be a lot happier if you spend more time in the produce section.

"Along with having less skin conditions, most people have a healthier glow about them. They just look better, their skin is more even-toned-it's hydrated better," says Allmendinger.

And when it comes to preventing acne in both teens and adults, a balanced diet is crucial.

"Apples in the morning with breakfast, eggs, again, and good quality meats are all great. Al la carte pizza, greasy food, it's not helping your skin at all. Your plate should have probably half of it be vegetables and then a portion of meat," says Allmendinger.

And even though milk sounds a likely healthy option, conventional pasteurized milk from cows can suppress hormones, which isn't ideal for teenagers, whose hormones are changing.

"I tend to recommend almond milk or rice milk. Soy milk also affects hormones, so it's a phytoestrogen, so if you have too much estrogen, it'll bring it down, if you have not enough, it will bring it up. That can be really tricky with teenagers," says Allmendinger.

For some, it may be tough to eliminate all junk food from a diet, but limiting it could be well worth it in the end.
