Secondhand Smoke Doubles the Risk of SIDS

Posted: Updated:

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is currently the leading cause of death among infants 12 months old and younger.

Studies have shown that exposure to secondhand smoke can double the risk of SIDS.  And, infants whose mothers smoke during pregnancy are three times more likely to die from the syndrome.

While the direct cause of SIDS is unknown, the North Dakota Department of Health says children that breathe in secondhand smoke after they are born have an increased risk of dying from SIDS.

"I think people probably are a little unaware that secondhand smoke can seep into places very easily.  You know, if you can smell that smell in your apartment, those toxins and that secondhand smoke is getting in there," says community outreach coordinator Holly Brekhus,  First District Health Unit.

To help pregnant women quit using tobacco, First District Health Unit offers a Baby & Me - Tobacco Free Program at nine of its locations in the state.  Women who quit smoking will get free diapers.
