Task Force Works to Reduce Natural Gas Flaring

Posted: Updated:

It can be seen from miles away, even from space. And now, North Dakota leaders are researching ways to reduce flaring on oil pads. Today, a relatively new task force headed by the North Dakota Petroleum Council presented their preliminary information and solutions to the Industrial Commission.

There are several key factors in the process of capturing natural gas, which can pose time and engineering restraints. From the richness of natural gas, the constraints that weather puts on construction, to the ability to gain access and easements to lay new pipeline, there is no one silver bullet solution according to leaders. Yet, Petroleum Council president Ron Ness says laying pipelines is a key part in both a short and long term solution.

"There's a lot of technical components to how you do that and how you would to do that in that situation. The best solution is to get the pipelines in there, get the infrastructure built and be smart in how you're trying to connect wells and reduce you flaring from day one," says Ron Ness, North Dakota Petroleum Council.

Ness says the task force will continue to meet and look into both long term and short term goals and will share their findings at the next Industrial Commission meeting in January.
