Local Groups Plant Hope

Posted: Updated:

There may be a light dusting of snow on the ground, but that didn't stop several local groups from helping out with the Planting Hope Project.

Situated near Minot's Bark Park and Jack Hoeven Baseball Complex sits Centennial Park.  And, over the past few years, it's been getting a facelift.

"Last year, we planted thousands and thousands of bags of seed to green up the area," says Ken Kitzman, Minot Area Community Foundation President.

But, now, it's all about trees.  The Minot Area Community Foundation along with the Minot Rotary Clubs and Minot Park District teamed up to plant not just one, but 100 trees.

"We're here in Centennial Park to start re-greening and creating a new park with lots and lots of big trees," says Kitzman.

They already have an entire row of trees planted and it's taken no time at all because they have plenty of helping hands.

"We need more common park areas and this is an area down here that is pretty much undeveloped and has tremendous potential for usage," explains Kitzman.  "There's a lot of raw land that we can still make good things happen down here.  So, yes, we're really thrilled that we're actually here in this location and we can make a difference."

Years down the road, Kitzman hopes Centennial Park resembles the city parks in the area to help bring the community together.  But, he says there's still a lot more work to be done.

The Planting Hope Project will be featured as one of Minot State University's Power of 100 service projects to give back to the community in honor of their centennial celebration.
