City Gears Up for Winter

Posted: Updated:

With a few snowflakes hitting the ground over the past two days, we are reminded that winter is on the way.  And the city is nearly ready to tackle the upcoming season.

Minot's street department has spent about the last five week days getting city blades and plows ready.  The crew has been installing winter tires and snow-gates, and making sure all safety lights are working correctly.  Minot will have seven blades for the upcoming winter, five of which are leased from a local contracting company.

Along with prepping the city vehicles, the street department is working a new snow plan for Minot.

"Obviously the city has grown quite a bit.  We actually added a lot of new streets this year, so we've re-done some snow routes.  We're trying to sit down and determine which streets are going to be ours to take care of," says street superintendent Rick Hair.

Hair says he is still in the process of hiring five more blade operators for the upcoming winter.  Minot typically has 14 blade operators that work two 12 hour shifts per day during heavy snow days.  Hair knows it will be a challenge to bring the new employees up to speed, but he says his team will be ready to hit the streets when the snow does arrive.
