Shiloh Teacher Returns to School after Near-Fatal Crash

Posted: Updated:

Nearly eight months after Dawn Ulmer's almost fatal car crash, she's back teaching at Shiloh Christian School. Education Reporter TaTiana Cash went to Shiloh to see how Dawn is adjusting to her first semester back.

Dawn Ulmer was in her first year of teaching at Shiloh Christian School. On her way to a basketball game in Fort Yates, she was involved in a head on car crash.

"I guess when everyone kinda found out that it was Ms. Ulmer everyone was just kinida like, not like, we were all balling and stuff at the game," says student London Lambrecht.

After weeks in the hospital, undergoing several surgeries and physical therapy, Shiloh Christian School hosted a benefit in her honor.

"The Shiloh students came and they gave an entire day to serve others. And when I rolled into that benefit, which was one of my first real outings after the accident. It just left me speechless to see all those students dressed up ready to serve people. And they were doing that out of the goodness of their heart. I mean where you do see that?" says Ulmer.

Ulmer continued to recover over the summer and by the beginning of this school year, decided it was time to go back to teaching again.

"I guess that just everyday is a gift and you just realize stuff happens unexpectedly like that," says student Quinn Wrigley.

"I would say one word that described it and that would be hope. Hope that she could come back, she would recover," says Michael Kuehn.

Ulmer says she ends everyday making sure that she has lived to the fullest, gave back as much as she could and tried her best to set an example for others to follow.

Ulmer says she still has more surgeries to go and should technically still be resting instead of teaching. However, she says she was so touched by all the support, she was determined to go back to teaching.
