Program Helps New Moms

Posted: Updated:

Bringing home a new baby is quite often stressful and there are constant questions and uncertainties. Mercy medical has a new program to help new moms with this exciting transition.

Bringing baby home is a program created by the upper Missouri district health unit and building healthy families. Its purpose is to provide support to local mothers with young babies. The program was inspired by a booming birthrate here in Williston

"There's a Lot of people that now live in Williston that maybe don't have support or their families don't live here as well as those who have lived their most of their lives. We've doubled our birthrate in Williston - or almost doubled it - from what I understand, and being able to get some of these questions answered and just be reassured : are things on track, how are we doing. It's nice to have someone to bounce ideas off of. Plus it's a good way for some moms to meet other moms" explained Liz Bustad, a consultant at Bringing Baby Home.

The program is free of charge, offered twice a month, and was created to answer the tough "mommy" questions and also to help bring New moms together.

"Moms or families are welcome to bring their children or their babies up to four months of age. When they come, they will visit with the nurse. The baby can also be weighed, be measured so they can kind of see how they're doing growth wise. They also have the opportunity if they're breast feeding to have services from a lactation consultant" added Bustad.

Local moms are excited for this program and to pick up some new tips

"I figured it would be fun to come and check it out. Get to know new things I didn't know before- whatever is going to help me be a better mom to my daughter" said new mom Melissa Edwards.

Other free classes offered by the building healthy family program are breast feeding, child birth education, baby basics, and a car seat safety tutorial.
