Elementary School Honors Pledge of Allegiance

Posted: Updated:

For years, children across the country have grown used to reciting the Pledge of Allegiance at school, but recently, there's been controversy surrounding the "under God" part of the pledge. One Minot school honors the historic document in a unique way.

For students at Longfellow Elementary School, every day begins by saying the Pledge of the Allegiance.

"The Pledge of Allegiance that is on the wall has been on the wall since 1949," says Principal Tracey Lawson.

As you walk down the hall to stop and look at the historic display, you may look twice because something is missing.

"As people see that, they will notice the words ‘Under God' is not in the pledge," says Lawson.

Since 1949, everything in the Longfellow Elementary School lobby area is original, including the Pledge of Allegiance.

"It wasn't until 1954 that the words ‘Under God' were added to the pledge.  So, truly, this reflects the pledge at that time in history," says Lawson.

But, throughout the years, the historic display has gotten a major facelift.

"We had wanted to update it with color and do something to accentuate the wonderful architecture from 1949.  And, even what we had thought about what it might look like what it turned out to be is totally different and just a beautiful piece of our school," says Lawson.

Since the letters were so fragile, they couldn't be moved when the school was being remodeled.

"The painter that did the work spent over 100 hours painting actual letters and then, the background color," says Lawson.

Lawson's hope is to preserve the old along with the new to make the building even more special for generations to come.

To check out the historic display, Longfellow Elementary School is hosting a Community Open House on Monday, October 28 from 6-8 p.m.  The public is encouraged to attend.
