FDA Warns Pet Owners of Toxic Treats

Posted: Updated:

The FDA is warning pet owners to be careful what they feed their pets, especially when it comes to treats. Thousands of dogs across the country have become sick after eating jerky treats.

Dogs love them and owners love to give them, but some treats are actually making pets sick.

"There's been and actually it's been going on about seven years, a mysterious link between jerky treats, or dog treats that contain chicken, duck that are jerky like consistency, linked to some mysterious illnesses," says veterinarian Dr. Angie Bettenhausen.

So far, the FDA has been notified of nearly 600 deaths and more than 3,600 dogs and 10 cats who have gotten sick after eating the treats that were made in China.

"We don't feed our dogs that kind of thing, especially if it's made in China. We are very careful what we feed them. Remember a few years ago, they had a food problem? Again, a lot of that was made in China. So, we're very careful and particular about what we feed our dogs," says pet owner Alan Wilson.

If a pet is given a contaminated treat, signs could start to show up within hours or days. Owners should look out for decreased activity in the animal, vomiting, diarrhea and increased water consumption and urination.

"That's one of the complaints, the kidney related illnesses. The others are related to the gastrointestinal tract," says Bettenhausen.

If you still want to buy the treats, Dr. Bettenhausen says try and find ones that say on the label that they are made in the United States from products that originated here.

"Or you can buy treats that are made by local individuals too and just avoid the pre-packaged, highly processed treats that we have some questions about," says Bettenhausen.

Another option is to feed your pet fruits or veggies. But, Bettenhausen says to stay away from onions, garlic and grapes.

If your pet does get sick you should bring the treats in to the vet when you bring the animal in, so they can be tested.
