Don't Buy It Until We Try It: Chillow

Posted: Updated:

With lots of physical activity, you usually end up with an ache or pain.  But, ice packs can be bulky to hold and leak everywhere.  Well, there may be a way sooth and cool achy backs and soar feet on your favorite pillow.  In this week's "Don't Buy It, Until We Try It," I tried out the Chillow.

At the gym, people are working out on ellipticals while others are lifting weights, but after an intense work out, muscle can start to hurt.

"Every once in awhile, we'll have an ankle roll or something just gets a little swollen, you know, aggravated knee injuries that somebody may already have.  So, usually, that's when ice comes into play and we ice it, you know, to make sure they don't stay swollen for very long and take some of the pain away" says personal trainer Justine Conover.

But, after awhile, the ice usually melts in the Ziploc bag, causing a big mess.

"It's just kind of everything you use is a pain in the neck."

To hopefully cut down on uncomfortable ice leaks, we decided to try out the Chillow.  It sells for around $15 and promises to provide cool relief.

It's time to fill up the Chillow with some water.  Just take off the cap and put about 6-7 cups of warm water in it.  I'm going to do it over the sink, so I don't spill.  We already had about 5 in here, so I'm going to seal it up.  Now, it's ready for the fridge.

Once the Chillow was cool and icy, it was ready to pull out and use.

"You know, this side would be really nice, obviously to wipe off anything that might get on it, especially if you're putting in your fridge.  This might keep it from sliding around at night, which might be, you know, kind of nice, especially if you're laying it it's on this and it's not in a pillowcase," explains Conover.

With the Chillow being larger than a traditional ice pack, you'll notice it fits around the entire ankle easily.

"It's really cold.  For the most part, it's pretty soft.  So, it would be pretty comfortable I think.  It's going to ice the whole area and not just a part of it."

And, it's durable too.

"It doesn't pop open even when you squeeze it," says Conover.

So, are we cool with the Chillow?

"I actually really like it," says Conover.  "I think it may actually be a good thing for the gym to maybe have on hand.  Like if someone ends up getting a sprain or, you know, where the swelling is almost immediate.  Just wrap them up until they can get home and take care of themselves or see a doctor."

If you tend to get stiff necks and backs like myself, this is a good product for you.  It's easy to set up and the cool relief feels great.  To clean up, just use a little soap and a paper towel and you're set.

So, this week's "Don't Buy It Until We Try It," earns a thumbs up.
