BSC Renovates Student Union

Posted: Updated:

Across the state, college enrollment is up. At Bismarck State College, school administrators have decided to expand buildings on campus.

BSC's Student Union was built in 1974, and since then has been able to withstand the student population. But with enrollment continuing to increase, construction began on an expansion last year.

With statewide school enrollment on the rise, colleges are making use of every square inch of their campus. But Bismarck State College is running out of space. Having used up all the space in its Student Union, for various clubs and offices, the building is in the process of expanding.

"And we wanted more space for them to hang out. And really have a union, a feel for a union. A game room, a lounge, you know, places for them to mingle and be students. We didn't really have that with this building," says director of student and resident life Heather Shehan.

Construction for the 9 million dollar expansion began in the summer of 2012. Renovations on the north side of the building, did take away some sidewalks and a large chunk of the parking lot. But it's all for the greater good, says BSC administrators.

"I think it's gong to be positive. In know that right now it's kind of bugging some people with all the construction, having the sidewalks close and stuff like that. But I think overall, it's going to be a huge benefit to everyone," says Karley Leland, Student Government Association.

Despite some opposition to the construction, students at Bismarck State College are excited for the opening of the new student union in 2015. The new building will give everyone on campus more options.

"They're actually going to have more options. The options are going to be greater because it's all going to be combined. So it's going to be beneficial for the students, for any of our staff, even for the public that comes and joins the students," says snack bar supervisor Mary Fisk.

Expansion of the Student Union will have new seating arrangements throughout the building, a bigger game room, one large dinning facility, and much more.
